The Return of Wifey

Barrett gobbled down her Italian sausage then reached for
her French fries.  She was still nursing T.J. so her appetite
had doubled, but the good news is that since she was
nursing she burned enough calories so she didn’t gain
weight. “Hand me that ketchup.”

Sierra laughed before passing Barrett the condiment.  “So
how does it feel to be back at work full time?”

“Great!  It was confusing working from home and then going
into the office while I was going through nanny hell.  Half the
time I couldn’t remember where I left my files.  I think my
secretary and paralegal hated me, but I got them a couple gift
cards for that new spa that opened downtown, hopefully that’
ll make up for all the confusion.”

Sierra grinned.  “So tell me about your new nanny.  I’m sure
you have a good story to tell.  You always get the nannies
from hell.”

Barrett stopped chewing.  “Um, she’s okay,” she muttered.

“Just okay.  Come on, I’m sure you have more to say about
the lady who’s watching your children,” Sierra cajoled.

Barrett dropped the French fry she was about to put in her
mouth.  She had to tell Sierra the truth, she would find out
eventually.  “Sage is watching them,” she mumbled.

“What? What did you say?”

“Sage is watching them,” she repeated loudly.

Sierra stared at her friend.  “You’re kidding right?”

“No, I ran into her at Whole Foods, and—”

Sierra slapped her palms on the table and leaned towards her
friend.  “I don’t care where you two became reacquainted.
Have you forgotten how she almost broke up your marriage
and have you forgotten how depressed you were after you
kicked her out?” she hissed.

“I wasn’t that bad.  I was a little—”

“You were fucked up.  You lost fifteen pounds, you were a
walking skeleton, you stopped wearing makeup, and you
barely made it in to work.  It took you about a year before you
were yourself again.”

“Okay, I was a little sad, I admit it.”

“You were fucking heartbroken, acting like you lost the love
of your life. And now you’re letting her back in and around
your kids.”

“She made a mistake and she apologized.”

“Barrett?  Really?”

“She did and she seemed remorseful.  She told me all about
how she was so upset with herself that she became an
escort,” Barrett explained and continued while ignoring
Sierra’s snort of disgust.  “And she opened up a gentlemen’s
club but her partner had stolen all her money and it was a lot
of money almost a million dollars,” she said her voice
earnest.

Sierra pushed her food away, she suddenly lost her appetite.
“Everything you said involved her pussy, that thing that you
are so in love with.  I don’t think she changed, I still think that
she is the same conniving bitch she was four years ago, you
just don’t see it because you’re in lust.”

Barrett struggled not to yell at her friend.  “Just calm down.
Nothing’s going to happen.  I’m immune to Sage, we will not
be doing anything,” she said, although at this point she
didn’t believe it herself.

“Keep telling yourself that.  I think you’re making a mistake
and like I told you four years ago, you’re going to regret it.”
